| It was four in the morning and Callie was startled
awake by a recurring dream; a remnant of her childhood that still made her
heart thud with a beating altogether extraordinary. She clapped onto her
breastbone, breathing heavily, almost wheezing. "Damn it." She absentmindedly patted the charm of her necklace. She looked over at the clock blaring on her right side. "Christ, it's only four." Falling back to her pillows, she closed her eyes, hoping she would fall asleep again. She lay there squeezing her eyes closed for fifteen minutes before she succumbed to the wanting of her bladder. "God damn it." She threw off her quilt and goose bumps quickly fashioned themselves on her bare legs. She walked to her door, down the hall and into the bathroom without turning on a light. The seat was cold and she gave a shiver before she started to pee. Through the mottled glass of the shower window, she could make out that the sky was overcast and the sun barely poked out behind the clouds. Over the years she'd adjusted to the months of constant, yet sheltered sunlight. Coming in through the window, the sun gave the bathroom a pink hue. She clicked on the vanity lights around the medicine cabinet mirror and examined her pores. "Good morning, Callie," she thought. "It's earlier than you wanted, but why not get up? It's not like sleep feels good anymore, anyhow." Down the hall and in the bedroom to the right, Callie's sister was sitting on her bed and reading a textbook. She looked at her door with expectation when she heard the noise in the bathroom. Glancing at her clock, she scoffed at the hour. "Why doesn't anyone in this family sleep?" Tracey said this to herself softly, and rose to go into the hall. "Hey kid," Callie said when Tracey poked out her head. "Morning, Cal. Couldn't sleep?" "That dream, again." "Oh." "Why are you up? Don't you have finals this week?" "Studying all night. I didn't even know what time it was until I heard you." "You're too dedicated a student, T." "You're one to talk." "I didn't pull all-nighters. Not one." |
